Gutter Replacement

Gutters are sized for the roof above them. Most old ones weren't.

Gutters are simple until they are not. The capacity of the system has to match the roof area draining into it, the pitch has to move water to the downspouts, and the hangers have to hold the weight of a full run of water in a Pacific Northwest storm.

When we replace gutters we size the system to the roof rather than matching whatever was there before — a lot of older houses in this region have gutters that were undersized from the day they went up.

When gutters need replacing rather than cleaning

  • Sagging runs that hold standing water even when clear
  • Seams that leak, or joints that have separated
  • Gutters pulling away from the fascia board
  • Rusted-through sections, or dents from a fallen branch
  • Overflow during heavy rain even immediately after a cleaning — a sizing problem, not a debris problem
  • Fascia rot behind the gutter, which means water has been sitting there a long time

What a replacement includes

  • Removal and disposal of the existing gutters
  • Inspection of the fascia board, with rotted sections addressed before new gutter goes up
  • New gutter sized to the roof area draining into each run
  • Correct pitch to the downspouts so nothing stands
  • Downspouts placed and routed to move water away from the foundation
  • Hangers spaced for the load a full run actually carries in a Northwest storm

How we do it

  1. Size it to the roof

We calculate what each run has to carry instead of matching what was there. Undersized gutters overflow no matter how clean they are.

  2. Fix the fascia first

New gutter mounted to rotted fascia is new gutter that will come loose. If the board is gone, it gets addressed before anything hangs on it.

  3. Finish where the water lands

The system is not done at the downspout. It is done when the water is leaving the foundation.
